chanel showed futurism amidst decay in the fall haute couture 2013 show. of the collection, lagerfeld said, “On the way from the Old World to the New World … And fashion is the only way to make the trip.” reflected in the collection is this “tradition with future” theme, evidenced by shiny fabrics in classic cuts. i found a few judy jetson meets jane austen moments as the clothes were shown in the grand palais, which had been turned into a grand theater … but one that had seen much better days, a relic of the old, perhaps, as karl transported us to his future.
this old versus new theme was also reflected in the beauty look, and more specifically, in the nails. the sheer pink classic called ballerina graced the models’ nails, a nod to the old, but also on the models’ hands were stacks upon stacks of glittering midi rings, some even placed over the nail itself. midi rings aren’t exactly a new trend, but now that chanel has jumped on the bandwagon, i think we can expect to see a lot more of them. scroll through for a closer look.
